Forum-Nexus Study Abroad Itinerary

  • July 3 - 9

As a student with Forum-Nexus, you will arrive to the Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) airport in the morning on July 3, where you will be received by Forum-Nexus (FN) staff members who will coordinate your transfer to the hotel. An orientation program will take place that afternoon.

Barcelona is a fabulous coastal city with beaches, mountains, outdoor markets, restaurants, and museums. You will be able to admire the striking Art Nouveau architecture of Antoni Gaudi in the Sagrada Familia Cathedral and several other sites throughout the city such as Parc Güell, La Pedrera, and Casa Batlló. Barcelona is a powerful center of industry and commerce with the largest port on the Mediterranean.

You will visit Spanish and multinational companies and take classes on the campus of the AACSB-accredited IQS School of Management.

Over the weekend, you have the flexibility to travel to another city/country on an independent weekend trip or excursion. On Saturday, we recommend an Independent Weekend Day Trip to the charming medieval city of Girona (Game of Thrones!). On Sunday, we recommend an Independent Weekend Day Trip to the beautiful beach town of Sitges. The suggested cities for an overnight Independent Weekend Excursion are Berlin, Lisbon, and Madrid.

  • July 9 - 13

From Barcelona, all Forum-Nexus students, faculty, and staff will travel together to Paris, the heart of French culture, politics, and business.

In Paris, you will be able to visit the Louvre Museum, the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Arc de Triomphe, and the iconic Eiffel Tower! During a free afternoon, you can stroll along the banks of the Seine River or window shop on the Champs-Elysées.

While in Paris, you will have the opportunity to visit important French and international companies, as well as take classes on the campus of a local university.

You may elect to participate in an Independent Weekend Excursion to London or Amsterdam, departing from Paris Friday evening and returning to Geneva Sunday afternoon, then transferring to Chamonix by private shuttle.

  • July 13 - 18

From Paris we travel by private coach to Chamonix, a beautiful town nestled in the French Alps. On the way to Chamonix, we will stop in Geneva, Switzerland’s highly cosmopolitan city. Geneva is home to the European headquarters of the United Nations, located in the historic Palace of Nations building. After our professional visit to the UN, we will continue to Chamonix.

During your free time on Sunday, we recommend visiting the Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice), one of the biggest ice glaciers in Europe!

Classes in Chamonix will be held in the hotel’s conference center. On Monday afternoon after class the group will visit the top of the Brévent mountain via cable car to take in the amazing views of Mont Blanc. This activity is optional but highly recommended!

  • July 18 - 22

From Chamonix we depart on a day trip to the Italian city of Como. The city has a charming historic center with many piazzas filled with restaurants and cafes, an impressive cathedral, and a very picturesque waterfront on Lake Como. The city built its wealth on the silk industry and it remains Europe's most important producer of silk products.

From Lake Como we will travel to the city of Lugano, a popular tourist destination in Switzerland. Besides its natural beauty, Lugano is also an important center of banking, business, and higher education. We will visit the esteemed campus of Franklin University Switzerland, a U.S.-accredited liberal arts university with a highly international student body.

In the evening we arrive to Milan, Italy’s proud capital of business, finance, and fashion. The city is famous for the Duomo, one of the grandest Gothic cathedrals in the world, Leonardo da Vinci’s painting The Last Supper, and the world-class La Scala Opera House. Milan is considered a shopping paradise: The designer district is home to the flagship stores of Armani, Versace, Moschino, Prada, and many more.

On Saturday, we recommend an Independent Weekend Day Trip to the picturesque fishing villages of Cinque Terre, and on Sunday to the ever romantic city of Venice. We suggest an Independent Weekend Excursion to Prague or Budapest, or to plan an overnight stay in Cinque Terre or Venice. On Monday morning, classes are held at the hotel before we depart for Rome.

  • July 22 - 27

From Milan we travel by high-speed train to the eternal city of Rome! You will be able to visit the impressive St. Peter’s Basilica and Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, as well as the Coliseum, the Spanish Steps, and the Trevi Fountain.

On Wednesday, we recommend taking an independent visit to the Vatican Museums after class. On Thursday, there will be a professional visit to the headquarters of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization.

The suggested cities for an Independent Weekend Excursion are Athens, Santorini, and Florence. Students choosing this option do not fly back to Rome, but rather fly to Rhodes on Sunday night.

  • July 27 - August 2

From Rome we will fly to Rhodes, one of Greece’s most attractive islands. You will stay in a beautiful 5-star beachside resort, attend classes in the resort's conference center, and have the opportunity to visit the charming Old Town, encircled by medieval walls.

At the end of the program, there will be a festive farewell dinner and diploma ceremony featuring traditional food and music. You may fly home or to your next destination at any time on August 2.

You may enroll in one or two regular courses, or a combination of a regular course and an SIS course or an internship. All students participate in the International IQ Seminar course.

Regular Courses

Classes for the regular courses are conducted on weekday mornings, either at a local campus or in the conference center of the hotel. The professor for each course travels with the group from city to city. Each regular course (section 01 and section 03 courses) is worth 3 credits. All students participate in the International IQ Seminar, conducted by Dr. Hugo Hervitz, which is worth 3 credits and provides an overview of European history, geography, language, and politics.

  • Section 01 classes are held from 9:00 a.m. - 10:35 a.m.

Supervised Independent Study (SIS) Courses

Students enrolled in a Supervised Independent Study (SIS) course pursue structured independent work, following a well-defined syllabus, under the supervision of one or two faculty members. Each SIS course is worth 3 credits.

Not every student is permitted to enroll in an SIS course. Interested students must fill-out the SIS Course Request Form justifying their suitability for the course and their ability to conduct independent work. Students enrolled in an SIS course are required to also enroll in a regular 3-credit course.

International IQ Seminar

One of the highlights of Forum-Nexus programs is the emphasis placed on acquiring a higher level of International IQ, or the minimum level of international knowledge a student should have in order to present themselves as a cultured and educated individual in an international setting.

All students participate in the International IQ Seminar, conducted by Dr. Hugo Hervitz, which is worth 3 credits and includes:

  • Essential European geography and history
  • Current international events
  • Cultural characteristics of the European countries
  • Familiarity with the pronunciation and basics of select European languages

Students may select the general version of the seminar (INT 355) or one of its specialized versions (ECO 355, POL 355, or SOC 355).

The Forum-Nexus Internship Program provides students with an opportunity to gain valuable academic and professional experience while earning 3 credits for their experience. There are a limited number of openings. There are internships available in Communication, Hospitality Management, Marketing, Management, and Photography & Videography. Students enrolled in an internship course are required to also enroll in a regular 3-credit course.

Professional Visits

One of the things that makes Forum-Nexus unique is the emphasis placed on professional experiences and networking opportunities.

Professional visits take place throughout the program, usually in the afternoon, at leading companies and international organizations. Most visits include detailed discussions with executives, followed by a tour of the facilities.

All students participate in at least 6 professional visits.

Professional Visits

Independent Cultural Visits

In addition to visiting global companies and organizations, Forum-Nexus students make the most of their time in each city by participating in Independent Cultural Visits (ICVs). These visits may include experiences at historical sites and landmarks, museums, art galleries, traditional music or dance performances, and culturally relevant events.

All students participate in at least 8 ICVs.

Independent Weekend Day Trips and Excursions

On Saturdays and Sundays, you may elect to spend free time exploring the FN city that we are in, or you may choose to travel to another city for a day or for the entire weekend.

An Independent Weekend Excursion is an overnight trip to another city/country during a weekend. It involves leaving Friday evening or Saturday morning, and in most cases, returning to the FN city on Sunday evening for classes on Monday.

We encourage you to take maximum advantage of your free time in Europe. In many cases, this will be achieved through group activities with all Forum-Nexus students, but at other times you will enjoy the company of a smaller number of friends sharing specific interests. In order to facilitate this process, we encourage the formation of the following clubs:

  • Fitness and Running Club - For active students wishing to explore each city by running before class in the mornings, hiking (where applicable), and staying fit while studying abroad.
  • Photography Club - For photography majors and students who just love to take pictures, this club will meet to explore each city together to take photos of unique neighborhoods, small villages, mountains, and lakes.
  • Art and History Club - This club is ideal for students who would like to spend time exploring the amazing wealth of museums, cathedrals and historical sites in each of the European cities visited.
  • Food Club - Students in the food club will enjoy visiting authentic and unique restaurants in each city, sampling the local cuisine as well as the gastronomic contribution of immigrant groups in each country.
  • Soccer Club - Avid soccer fans will have the opportunity to visit Camp Nou in Barcelona, the Stade de France in Paris, and San Siro in Milan, attend some soccer matches together, or find opportunities for playing soccer in their free time.
  • Music and Dancing Club - For students who have an appreciation for music and love to dance, this club may explore each city by attending concerts, listening to live music, learning about local dances in each city, and visiting the most popular venues.

Forum-Nexus is the facilitator of the clubs, but the initiative comes from the students themselves, usually starting via our private Facebook group 1-2 months before the start of the program.
